Internet Memes: Sharing Views and Culture

p Recently as I sat in the offices of my insurance company looking about a a href=http://www.blclaims.co.uk/page/clinical_negligence_personal_injury_trustsPersonal Injury Trusts compensation/a, I was engaged in a conversation with an Internet marketer who was telling me about Internet memes. I had never heard the term before so explained to me what it was. I was surprised to find out it is widely used throughout the Internet and especially in the marketing field. Here is a bit of what he shared with me. /p/p

p class=MsoNormalA meme is cognitive information which turns to a behavior that most people imitate. It is an idea created in the form of a song, fashion, music or jokes. An internet meme is a piece of a video, picture or other media products which is passed from one person to another through social networks, new sources, blogs, direct e-mail and other internet-based services. /p p class=MsoNormal /o:p/p p class=MsoNormalInternet memes are found to be entertaining and humorous nowadays. They are usually done by people imitating a funny, real life event, acting ridiculously with people who are in danger, never ending music remixes, or even simple harmless picture memes made most of the viewers smile. /p p class=MsoNormal /o:p/p/p

p class=MsoNormalOn the other hand, there are internet memes which focus more on drama and shock-value. Others have deep content, intellectual absurdity and involve public commentary. There are even memes that are more about myths and teaching viewers a lesson. Itrsquo;s more like someonersquo;s personal experience, or a bundle of cultural viewpoints that is spread to the people like a computer virus. /p p class=MsoNormal /o:p/p p class=MsoNormalIt was historically known that memes are means of cultural propagation to transmit cultural ideas and social memories. With the advancement of technology, they are now technically known as internet memes. Today they are now commonly spread by young teenagers and post adolescents who have greater playful curiosity about them. Internet memes today are widespread and continue to bring information and humor to many people every day. /p p class=MsoNormal /o:p/p/p

Walk a mile in their shoes

p I have been watching today’s 24-hour coverage of the Dale Farm eviction with a mixture of fascination and horror. I had most of the day off as I was teaching a a href=http://www.abromhead.co.uk/patient-handling-train-the-trainer.aspmoving and handling train the trainer/a course this morning and only had a couple of very enthusiastic students. Thanks to their eagerness to get through the material, I was on my sofa holding a mug of tea, munching on some really wonderful cookies and watching the story unfold before 11am!/p/p

p class=MsoNormalI canrsquo;t help but feel some sympathy for the Travellers (or Gypsies ndash; not sure what the difference is to be honest!) who have made their homes on the land. Not only have they been allowed to build up homes and a community on this site, only to have it unceremoniously removed from them, but the attitudes of their neighbours reminds me a lot of the way my family and others were treated when we first arrived in the UK from Eastern Europe. /p/p

p class=MsoNormalAll immigrants (and anyone else who is not part of the ldquo;normalrdquo; population) are always regarded with suspicion; inevitably it is assumed that wersquo;re only here to get our hands on benefits, better housing and free healthcare. If you read The Daily Mail, you probably think that there are no Eastern Europeans even working in the UK ndash; though a trip to any bar in London will soon disavow you of that notion! I work very hard to earn enough money so I can pay my rent and contribute to society. I know many immigrants and refugees who work several jobs a week to ensure they can look after their families without having to turn to the government for help. How many native Brits can say the same thing? I donrsquo;t know about the individual circumstances of those living at Dale Farm. Maybe they are all dole scroungers; maybe they are benefits cheats, thieves and criminals. But I would bet a lot of money that most of them are just like me ndash; decent people trying to give themselves and their family a decent home./p/p

Guided disaster or daring genius?

posted by admin in Politics

When I heard about Cambridge’s – and that’s Cambridge in the UK, around an hour away from London – brand-new guided-bus idea, I was somewhat sceptical. Here is what I first learned about it.

1) It was to be the longest of its kind anywhere in the country.

2) It was going to be an alternative to the busy rush hour traffic.

3) It was going to give great views of the countryside.

4) The most important point: it was going to be ground-breaking…

And by ground-breaking, they seemed to be suggesting a new kind of transport which had never been seen before. The reality, of course, when you delved a bit deeper, was entirely different.

In fact, the guided bus had been seen before in a few other cities in UK, hence my negative first reaction. Had it been a success? Um…sort of. In reality, though, all it was was a bus which could go on both the road and on the funny guided rail things. So not that remarkable after all…

it cost an absolute fortune and promised no real payback

But the thing which got my goat the most, I confess, is the same thing which got many other peoples'goats; namely, that it cost an absolute fortune and promised no real payback at any point in the future. Here were councils around the country advising us to not take risks and be good citizens, and here they were with a scheme which completely flew in the face of basic common sense!

To my mind, that sounded like a Signage manufacturer run by people with short arms. No offence to people with short arms of course, but it’s going to be pretty difficult to paint tall signs when you’re of that persuasion, isn’t it?

Now, the wait is over and the guided bus is finally here; yes, after much speculation and anticipation it is running and carrying people to and from work DAILY. It’s much too early to say whether or not it’s a success or failure right now – only time will tell that tale and prove who was right and who was wrong.

I suppose one thing is good about the guided bus: it’s given us all something to talk about while we wait for the conventional bus. Anything that puts a smile on my face at 8am in the morning has to be worth something, I suppose…(I’m just not quite convinced that it’s worth the literally millions of pounds that it’s cost us all).

If you’re going to self-publish…

Poland is not the most glamorous place on Earth, it has to be said. When I think of Poland, my Poland, I think about it with love but I am realistic.

Some people are not so realistic, though!

Recently I was searching on Amazon when I came across a thriller set in Poland. Now, I was excited; it wasn’t every day that I came across such a thing.

Then I found the cover and…well, I wanted to be as far away from thoughts of Poland as I possibly could be. This cover did not represent Poland in any way! Instead of putting forth an image of a changing country, it made Poland out to be somewhere where everyone smokes and it is constantly snowing. Now, I know that this is somewhat true – even I cannot disguise that – but do I want to see this on the cover of a book? I don’t think so (but then again, I am sure you already guessed that part).

…be sure to consult someone who is a designer. This is common sense

This issue with book covers isn’t just happening with one self-published author on Amazon, if you hadn’t guessed – it is happening with a great many authors. I realise that it’s a lot to do – write your own book, edit it, design the cover, market it and more – but is it too much to ask for a bit of variety? If you ask me, book covers have been left behind for much too long. And that old saying, Don’t judge a book by its cover? It couldn’t be more ridiculous to my logical Polish mind. Back where I am from, everything and everyone is judged on first impressions. And I don’t think this is just a Polish thing; in fact, I see it around me in any country I visit, no matter how far afield. More

Is finding your father or mother worth it?

Recently, for some reason I cannot quite explain, I’ve noticed there are more and more shows on TV which focus on youngsters finding their real, true, biological parents. While on the surface this sounds like a wonderful premise for a TV show – and I have to admit that they are often very moving – sometimes the picture that is painted is anything but so. In fact, a few times I’ve watched it and found myself questioning whether or not the whole ordeal was a good idea to begin with.

But when he found her, she wanted nothing to dowith him. Not now, not ever. It was heart-breakingto watch and I can only imagine what the poor boywas going through at this dark and difficult time.

While some shows inevitably lead to happiness and a bond between two long-lost people that will last forever, others lead down far darker alleyways of deceit. In one I recently saw, a boy of 15 spent the best part of 6 months searching for his biological mother.

But when he found her, she wanted nothing to do with him. Not now, not ever. It was heart-breaking to watch and I can only imagine what the poor boy was going through at this dark and difficult time.

So you have to ask yourself: did it need to be shown on TV? I understand that TV shows have to suit every taste – from the independent financial advisor to the off-duty fire-man – but why show it at the cost of an individual’s soul? Surely there has to be a better way than that, right?

Another disturbing thing about these shows is the message they get across; as if anyone can find their mother or father if they wish to, and there are no limits or obstacles in the way. The reality, sadly, is not always that realistic. In fact, from my research I can tell you that more often than not nothing is accomplished.

Whatever the case for the future of shows like this, it’s something we’ll no doubt have to get used to.

Friends can be tough

My friend Tomas is a good guy. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a really good guy. He’s from Hungary somewhere, although he’s never told me exactly where it is he hails from. He works in a sandwich shop in the West End, which seems like a bit of a dubious gig for someone who’s 29 years old. But he has big dreams. Like, outrageously big dreams. One is that he wants to run his own airline. He flew a little bit when he was doing his National Service, although my understanding is that he never quite qualified as a private pilot, and now his big dream is to buy a plane and start an airline. The Farce That Once Was Britain.

Is it just me or is Britain rapidly turning into some kind of ‘police state’? We seem to have an ever-increasing amount of control being forced upon us in so many different ways -

· There are now more CCTV systems in Britain than any other country in Europe. And this means being scrutinised just about anywhere that we go.

· We are being swamped with bureaucracy and red tape (and most of this originates in Brussels) on a daily basis. Sure, a civilised society must have a certain amount of rules, but do we really need this many??? More

Traffic on the Streatham High Road

The traffic situation on the Streatham High Road seems to get worse and worse. The other day I was out looking at a carte r4 for my DS on the High Road and I could not believe it.
