Social networking and marketing opportunities

suggests utilizing social networks to spread the word about business products and services. It’s a very interesting business suggestion to encourage the selling of services and products through facebook contacts.
Facebook does have millions of users, but it also boasts advanced filters that can narrow down the target market. The law of averages would seem to point to being more successful with facebook marketing to a community of millions of users rather than your local business association group because you can talk directly to the people that would be interested in your product or service.
However people tend to trust people they know and have purchased from before. There is brand loyalty once a company is off the ground. For the small business without the marketing resources or indeed the know-how, it is not such an effective business strategy to venture off into unknown untested territory such as social network marketing.
Surely the very genre title of facebook which is called social networking should set off business alarm bells. Members of social networks are looking to do just that. Socialize. They are not looking to buy products and services. If they were to be bombarded by companies to buy their products and especially if these were from “friends”, the response may not be positive. Spending time and resources on such marketing that may fail is not always an option for small business.
Research in order to gauge if there is a market for actual sales of product via social networking needs to be undertaken extensively to prove that there is a market. At present it seems rather than a market for sales of products and services there is an opportunity here within such groups as facebook to raise awareness of businesses and create a cost effective web presence. In this regard, networking sites such as facebook can be a positive addition to the small business toolbox for successful marketing.
