Witch-y Politics

While looking online for manual handling train the trainer courses, I accidently stumbled on an interesting article about America on The Guardian homepage.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/20/christine-o-donnell-dabbled-witchcraft

For a country where the separation of church and state is written into its constitution, The United States of America is surprisingly propelled by its right wing Christian voters. I didn’t really know who Christine O’donnell was until I was told by The Guardian that she dabbled in witchcraft. How utterly bizarre and to what end is this revelation made.
She is very matter of fact saying that she had friends who were part of a coven and had a picnic on a satanic altar-she gets points for the correct use of the term coven, but satanic altar? really? What is interesting is the struggle between the media’s Bill Maher who wants her to appear on his show; the populist Tea Party, who in some ways has hijacked the methods of Obama to mobilize grassroots financial support; and a very flippant candidate with conservative views who just admitted to casually dabbling with paganism.
I am tempted by conspiracy theories like that put forward in 1991 by Alan Bleasedale in G.B.H., and that perhaps she is a plant by the government to discredit and divide the tea party. GBH is great, because it posits that the government is trying to undermine the left by putting getting in extremist moles. Conspiracy theories are funny because they assume that the government or Republican Party is very smart. This was the problem with Democrats during the election fixing of 2000 and 2004, none of them really could accept that the Republicans were smart enough and sneaky enough to try to rig a vote by systematically disfranchising African-Americans in Florida.
History and evidence show that there was a thorough and well planned effort which resulted in the rolling out of a new world order. But I am scratching my head at the moment wondering who does it serve to reveal that Christine O’Donnell is a witch.
